Instead of a coat-of-arms the sign shows a portrait of Thomas Gainsborough. Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) was an English landscape and portrait painter, almost as popular at the peak of his career as Reynolds. He is known for his many elegant portraits of women, and above all for his Blue Boy. Greens and blues predominate in his work.
