Lemington Gut is the former course of the River Tyne Image which had formed a long narrow meander about Lemington Point Image The river now flows in a wide curve on the far side of the new buildings of Newburn Riverside Business Park. The Gut was created when, in 1876, the Tyne Commissioners cut a new channel in the river near Blaydon to improve navigation up river, and the entrance to Lemington Loop was cut off.
