Former Floating Bridge terminus, Wharf Road, Woolston

Before the Itchen Bridge was built a chain ferry known as the Floating Bridge plied to and fro across the river. The former site of its Woolston terminal is the ramp to the left. In the background is the bridge, authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1960, although work on it did not begin until 22 March 1974. It took three years to complete, cost £5,710,630 and opened in June 1977. The Floating Bridge had run for the last time the previous day.
