Ordnance Survey records indicate that a benchmark was levelled at 391.896 feet above Liverpool Datum during the 1845 Kirkby Kendal to Thirsk 1GL Survey on a gatepost at the location now occupied by the telephone kiosk. The surveyor's description was 'No. 28. Mark on gate pier at South side of road, and opposite lane to Guldray Ruins ; 1.91 ft. above centre of road'
