This primary school was built in 1910 to replace the existing school in the dilapidated workhouse which was condemned. It was a Church of England school, usually referred to as the Bell School (or Ding Dong Academy), after Dr. Bell who had devised plans for mass education. In the 1960s, the school was threatened by plans for a town centre relief road to the north of the High Street, and the church decided to transfer to a new school - St Mark's, now Green Oak School - on Ockford Ridge Image In the event, plans for the northern relief road was abandoned and the school reopened.
