Herringbone drainage on the clifftop

In the very dry summer of 2010, patterns in the dry grass show the location of land drains laid out in a classic "herringbone" pattern. Aerial photography shows the pattern clearly, and that the drainage continues all the way down the slope of the cliff. The purpose is presumably to keep the water content of the soil down to prevent landslips.
