Looking back towards the junction with the A27. Now a dead end lane which allows access onto the South Downs at Bopeep only, however, between 1792 and 1819 this road was part of the main Lewes-Eastbourne turnpike. The original route had followed what is now the Old Coach Road along the foot of the Downs towards Alfriston and Long Bridge, this was changed in 1792 when the turnpike left the Old Coach Road at Bopeep Farm then headed north along this lane then towards Berwick Common, across the Cuckmere at Chilver Bridge, then through the grounds of Wootton manor until it reached Swines Hill Gate the site of the current junction between the A27/A22 combined and the route into Polegate. This cumbersome route was replaced by another more direct one in 1819 which is more or less the current one used by the A27.
