I seem to remember there was a great commotion about this because the council wanted to develop on it. However, the good news is that it's now owned by the Woodland Trust, and they appear to be planning for the next thousand years! The field will be cut once a year, after the flowers have seeded. There was a lot of nice purple-flowered "Tufted Vetch" plants when I went.
