At the date of this photograph, tram service was confined to the section between Pleasure Beach and Cleveleys: between Starr Gate and Pleasure Beach, and also between Ash Street and Fleetwood Ferry, the line was closed for modernisation. Between Cleveleys and Ash Street, it was closed because the overhead wire had been stolen. It was hoped to resume service as far as Ash Street at the end of July. In this picture, car 642 is seen reversing over the crossover before beginning its southbound journey. The livery it wears probably won a prize for the least attractive livery ever applied to a Blackpool tram.
