The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital was spawned as a specialist department of the Birmingham Hospital in New Street in 1817. It then moved to Great Charles Street in 1858 before eventually moving to its present site here, beside the Bristol Road. Today it is a National Health Trust and claims to be the largest elective orthopaedic unit in Europe. See http://www.roh.nhs.uk/index.php
