The stones forming the arch above this gateway were taken from the top two courses of the old village well of Tipperlinn which was situated behind the house. It would have been dug above the village for sound sanitary reasons and the villagers would have carried their wooden buckets up the line of the present-day Tipperlinn Road to fetch water.
