Merchiston controlled the south-western approaches to Edinburgh and was often involved in turbulent events, especially during the reigns of Mary and her son, James VI. In 1572, Kirkcaldy of Grange, holding Edinburgh Castle against the Protestant party in the name of the imprisoned Mary, ordered the tower's bombardment. After a long period of neglect in modern times, its demolition was considered, but it was finally restored and incorporated into Napier Technical College, built in the 1960s.
