One of the shorter streets from the second phase of the New Town as it expanded down the northern slope of the ridge from George Street. In keeping with the policy of adopting street-names affirming loyalty to the Hanoverian dynasty after the Jacobite rebellions, British heroes were honoured during this phase in names like Pitt Street and Howe Street. Even the Duke of Cumberland, whose reputation had earned him the nickname 'Stinking Billy' in much of Scotland had a street named in his honour by Edinburgh's patriotic North Britons. Image
