The terrace of miners' houses is the main group of older buildings in the village. It is now surrounded by a variety of newer properties. Van is a very different place from the derelict mining village I came across years ago; with the mining remains all but vanished under vegetation it now has the air of a desirable place to live. "Van" is derived from the "Fan" in "Y Fan", the Welsh "F" being pronounced like the English "V".
