Former Courtaulds factory, Carrickfergus

Courtaulds opened its man-made fibre factory in Carrickfergus in 1951 and closed it in 1981. The premises remain as “Carrickfergus Industrial Centre”. The factory was notable in having its own power station which originally used coal brought by rail from Larne harbour. It was also unusual in having two private industrial steam locomotives used to shunt the coal wagons inside the site. If my memory is correct, there was a suggestion, around 20 years ago, that the power station (by then closed) might be converted to burn domestic waste to produce electricity. Continue to Image
