The railway to Hayes as opened on 29 May 1882, and worked by the South Eastern Railway. At the time, Hayes was only a small village about half a mile from the railhead, and there was therefore little traffic on the line. Usually it was necessary to change at Elmers End, if wishing to travel to London. The railway became part of the Southern Railway in 1923, and following electrification in 1926, the area around the station became developed and the railway prospered. Through trains now operate to London Bridge all day.
