Former ironstone quarry between Sewstern and Stainby

The middle third of this gridsquare (from my vantage point on the side of The Drift, an old road which marks the county boundary, almost as far as Stainby church in the distance on the right) was, from 1945-60, Buckminster No 4 Quarry, one of an large number which extended over the parishes of Stainby, Sewstern, Gunby, Buckminster, North Witham and Thistleton, and were served by quarry railways. Quarrying ceased in the 1970s and the land has been restored to agriculture. Like most of the others in the area, the fields are below the level of the roads, as shown by the line of the B676, the northern limit of this quarry, which crosses the picture in front of the line of trees.
