The Whitton waterworks pumps water from an aquifer deep below ground through pipes several miles to feed the reservoir and water tower in Ipswich's Park Road near Christchurch Park. This Victorian method has largely been replaced by the 1980s construction of a massive reservoir south of the town called Alton Water.
