A Mercat Cross has occupied this spot since the 16th Century when the town received Burgh of Barony status. The cross sits in the oldest part of the town and the flags flying are due to the annual Braw Lads Gathering which is on this week. The gathering commemorates the Act of Sasine (which took place near this spot) relating to the marriage of James IV and Margaret Tudor.
