It might seem strange that the Earl of Dartmouth would have an interest in industrial innovation in Yorkshire. It was because the Manor of Morley was purchased by Baron Dartmouth from the Marquis of Halifax in 1706. The factory was built by William, the 2nd Earl, b.1731, d. 1801.
