Eating by the Prison

Now converted into an area of hotels, bars and restaurants, Oxford Castle's recent past as a prison is still very obvious. Some of it was actually constructed by the inmates themselves. If you take the guided tour, you will learn how one prison governor set the convicts to work to reconstruct their own prison. This wasn't as callous as it sounds because the prisoners were paid for their efforts, which meant that they could pay off their debts or fines and be released early.
