Built into a stone wall beside the old Main Road through the village centre. Burton (in Kendal) is 6½ miles to the right, Lancaster 4 miles to the left. Presumably, the milestone was placed before Carnforth developed in the latter half of the 19th century. I believe the main road to Kendal was via Burton and Crooklands, rather than via Milnthorpe as the current A6.
