Within this ornate wrought iron circle a statue once stood above the grave of James Montgomery (1771 -1854). He was a leading poet of his day, friendly with William Wordsworth and much published. He was also an abolitionist, the editor of a local newspaper and became influential in local government. The statue was moved in 1971 to the safer precincts of Sheffield Cathedral.
