Underneath the historic Harden Bridge it can be seen how the bridge has been widened at some time in the past. When first built it was probably only wide enough for one cart at a time. Nowadays traffic thunders past unabated on a new concrete bridge Image I wonder, does the cobbled surface represent an even earlier ford, or has it been laid to stop the water undermining the foundations of the bridge? This dry arch will no doubt be full of water in times of flood.
