In former times pounds were often built by a parish and the stray animals were kept there until their owners had paid for any damaged caused by them. The word 'pund' (pound) meaning enclosure is Saxon in origin. References in law records date from as early as 1183. The pound at Crowcombe is attached to Church House, opposite the Church.
