The visible face of the sign depicts John Skelton tutoring Prince Henry, later Henry VIII. Skelton was Rector of Diss St Mary's from 1504 until his death in 1529. The fountain in the background aerates the waters of The Mere and so prevents the fish suffocating. http://www.literarynorfolk.co.uk/diss.htm
