I would guess these posts are here to deter off-roaders who like to tear along tracks like this in SUVs and stuff. I may be wrong, but these are very stout posts just for a gate or something. And if you're thinking why not just go round the side, there's a nice ditch in amongst the nettles to catch the unwary.
