St Edmund's church in Downham Market - east window

St Edmund's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1876533 was built from local carstone and dates mainly from the 13th century. A cruciform church stood on this site in Norman times and some Norman features were discovered during a later restoration. Aisles were added during the 15th century and the west gallery dates from Victorian times when a major rebuilding took place. The C15 font bowl > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1876574 was reset on a new stem and base in 1855. The east window > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1876570 is by William Wailes who also designed three other windows in this church. It was installed in 1873 by John Wortley, farmer of Whitwell Hall, Skeyton > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/609604 in memory of his wife's family. The inscription underneath reads: "In honour and glory of God and in affectionate memory of John Dixon who died 18 June 1846, aged 70 years, and of Sarah his wife who died 23 January 1858, aged 80, and of John their son who died 19 June 1872, aged 60, and of Sarah Wright their daughter who died 25 August 1846, aged 30."
