This is the cylinder end of the 1879 Hick, Hargreaves & Co Corliss engine. The Spencer & Inglis patent double clip trip gear is in the centre. Above the cylinder is the main stop valve (always stop and never a start valve) with the James Tate patent electric stop motion. This shuts off steam if an emergency stop button is pressed in the mill. A common device but given how long it takes an engine like this to stop any victim would only be slightly less mangled than if they didn't bother.
