Kirkharle

Kirkharle was the birthplace of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown (1716-1783). He became a gardener and famous landscape designer to many of the country's great estates and eventually to George III. He lived and worked on this estate until the age of 23 but regularly returned later to visit family and friends. His plans to landscape the grounds of the Kirkharle Estate were recently discovered although never implemented. Ground works are currently in progress to create his design for a serpentine lake by damming the Kirkharle Burn http://www.kirkharlecourtyard.co.uk/explore/capbrown.php
