The tramway, which runs between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, opened in 1999. There is just this one route, despite proposals over the years for various others. Early in 2010 the Government promised funding to extend it further into Birmingham. There has also been some more discussion recently on a proposed loop around the centre of Wolverhampton. However whether the Birmingham extension will go ahead, plus a proposed replacement fleet of higher capacity trams, may perhaps be affected by the change of Government in May 2010. It has yet to be disclosed what transport projects will be affected by the much talked about cuts. In this view, Wishbone Bridge can be seen in the distance on the left. This carries the tramway across a roundabout on the ring road, or more accurately across the pedestrian underpasses. The tramway crosses the ring road at grade, i.e. at street level. Road traffic is controlled at these points by traffic lights. After leaving the bridge the tramway reaches its current terminus, known as St. George's. Image Image
