One of Edinburgh's oldest pubs with an interior little altered since the building of the 18thC New Town. Once known as "Willie's Bar", after its notoriously rude landlord who in spite of feminist trends insisted that women drink in a separate room, its most recent claim to fame is its appearance in Ian Rankin novels as Inspector Rebus' favourite watering-hole. It has also been popular with Norwegian students studying in Edinburgh, some of whom make an annual pilgrimage to relive their student drinking-days.
