Completed in 1905 to provided electricity for what was then the Metropolitan District Line, this power station was originally coal powered with a capacity of 50,000 kW. In the 1960s it was converted to be oil fired, with two of the original chimneys being removed. Further conversion work took place in the 1970s, when it became primarily gas powered. It ceased to be used in 2002, and the site is to be developed for mixed used, including two tower blocks either side of Chelsea Creek, one 122 m high the other 85m high, and with the main power station building being retained. Site clearance is already underway (as can be seen on the right of this photo). In the far distance can just be made out the Millennium Wheel and the City of London, with Battersea Bridge and Albert Bridge also visible.
