These delicately coloured blooms go by the name of cuckoo flower, milk maids, lady's smock, mayflower and many others, suggesting they have been familiar flowers to generations of country dwellers. The leaves once vied with watercress as a salad herb and its medicinal uses were recorded by Dioscorides. However it was also considered unlucky to bring indoors, as with many things connected with the month of May.
