Old mine shaft, Roachburn Colliery

Roachburn Colliery was worked from 1893 to 1908, producing household coal. It is remarkable in that it was the first colliery in the world to be powered by electricity. The stone walls enclosed the shaft, the building in the background housed the pit winding gear.
