Generator House, old Roachburn Colliery

Roachburn Colliery was worked from 1893 to 1908, producing household coal. It is remarkable in that it was the first colliery in the world to be powered by electricity. The building to the left was the generator house, producing DC power from a steam-driven generator fuelled by coal. The concrete pit housed the flywheel.
