Founded by William Booth in Whitechapel, London (1865), as a Christian Revival Association, it took the name Salvation Army, with an organisation on military lines, in 1878. The Army's unorthodox revivalism and militant teetotalism aroused initial hostility, but it became increasingly respected for its outstanding social work. It now operates in some 70 countries.
