Born in 1546, William Waad was admitted as a student to Grays Inn, learning much about the workings of the law. A few years later, began to travel the world with a view to acquiring knowledge and contacts to assist him in his desire to enter the service of government. Between 1576 and 1588 he travelled Europe extensively in a number of ambassadorial and diplomatic roles. His cunning and trickery served him well in both the service of the government and the crown. In 1588 he became MP for Thetford in Norfolk and later for Preston. But it was his duties as Clerk of the Privy Council that he practised with the greatest zeal, and gained a reputation of being a persecutor of his hated catholics. His best known success was of the tracing and capture of the perpetrators of the gunpowder plot, whilst in the office of Lieutenant of the Tower. However, there was a suspicion that Waad had tricked Thomas Winter into signing a document to which Waad added Winter's "confession" later. Years later Waad was dismissed from the post of Lieutenant on suspicion of embezzlement. Waad went into retirement and died at his home in Manuden on 21st October 1623, and was buried in this church.
