Former winding tower, Leeds Central Station

This winding tower is a remnant of Leeds Central Station, which opened in 1848 and closed in 1967. It sits uneasily between a retail park and modern office blocks. The station was built on 2 levels, trains used the top level, and there were trapdoors in the platforms through which goods could be lowered to wagons and lorries on the lower level.
