Francis Oats rose from working in the Balleswidden Mine at the age of 14, to becoming the captain of Botallack Mine and owner of Cape Cornwall before going out to South Africa as a mining engineer working for De Beers, the diamond company. After a few years he accepted the position of managing director of De Beers after Cecil Rhodes had relinquished the title. This he held for ten years before returning to Cornwall to build Porthledden House. He died in South Africa in 1918.
