Junction of High Street and Parkgate Road, Neston. One of the original Wirral hundred villages. In the sixteenth century Neston became a new port on the River Dee as the silting up of the river rendered Chester inaccessible to larger vessels. A quay was built from donations and Neston soon became an important embarkation point from the Wirral for Ireland, with a regular coach service to London. The progressive silting of the Dee saw the shipping trade move out to Parkgate where it eventually also declined.
