The depot now maintains trains for Northern Rail. It first opened in 1876 with the coming of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1878, workers in the railway yard formed Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) Football Club to indulged their passion for association football with games against other departments of the LYR or other railway companies. In 1902, the club changed its name to Manchester United.
