The Chesterfield Canal opened in 1777, and Norwood is the longest tunnel along it. After decades of trouble from mining subsidence, the tunnel was closed after a roof fall in 1907. The canal is currently open all the way from here to the Trent, and there are plans to re-open in the other direction all the way to Chesterfield.
