The business was started by Michael Marks in 1884, a Penny Bazaar stall, at Leeds Kirkgate market Image All items were sold for one penny, including nails, screw, soap, wooden spoons and luggage labels http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A43825629 The stall in Newcastle's Grainger Market is the world's smallest Marks and Spencer store and the sole survivor of Mark's original Penny Bazaars.
