As the name would suggest dark deeds took place here during the Battle of Kilsyth on 15th. August 1645 between the Army of the Covenant led by General Baillie and the Royalist force under the Marquis of Montrose. Fierce fighting took place on the high ground here and an entire Covenanter regiment was cut to pieces.
