The signmakers have shown themselves to be human here on the Keady Road near Newtownhamilton, County Armagh. It is indeed 19 miles from here to Dundalk (County Louth) if one continues on the A29 through Newtownhamilton, crossing the border at Drumbilla. However, for the pundits who decide to take the appealing 7 mile shortcut will be disappointed when they realise that it is in fact 18.8 miles to Dundalk by this route, not 12 - using twisty minor roads through the hamlets of Altnamachin and Cullyhanna, in fact cutting back onto the A29 south of Newtown. I have a suspicion that they may have meant to say "Crossmaglen 12" - which would more or less be accurate and indeed logical.
