Looking west to part of Hemel Hempstead New Town from the multistorey car park in Wolsey Road. In the foreground is the main shopping street, Marlowes, and the tower of Hemel Hempstead School (1931) can be seen as a white speck on the horizon. Hemel Hempstead existed as a settlement in the 8th century, but saw rapid expansion of housing and commerce after it was designated a New Town in 1947 to take overspill from London.
