After exiting Underbank Reservoir the Little Don River - also known as the Porter River - flows under Unsliven Bridge, on its way downstream to Stocksbridge and Deepcar, where it merges with the River Don ... and thereafter as far as Goole, where it flows into the River Ouse. According to an entry in the second edition of the ‘Around Stocksbridge’ book compiled by Stocksbridge and District Historical Society ... Unsliven is a misspelling of the word Unsleven, which itself is said to have derived from the word Unshriven which means Unblessed. So there you have it. Image Image
