The London & North Western Railway (LNWR) opened its Wigan to Manchester line via Atherton and Tyldesley in 1864. The line closed as a through route in 1969. A connection was made with the Great Central line (1884-1967) to Wigan Central station at Bickershaw Junction / Strangeways East Junction. This view is towards what would have been Bickershaw Junction and the connection with the LNWR line. Taken from the LNWR route on the over bridge.
