The Victorian suburb of Marchmont has only one pub (the Argyle Bar on another corner of this block), presumably as a result of the strength of the Temperance Movement when these streets were built in the 1880s. The Wine and Spirit Merchant's shop, shown here, is an interesting addition to what has been traditionally a 'dry' area.
